Lewes Recent Bookings Overview

The Lewes Police Department handles almost all booking work inside the city. The mailing address is P.O. Box 227, Lewes, DE 19958. The physical station sits at 114 East Third Street. The main phone line is 302-645-6264, the fax is 302-645-1080, and 911 covers any emergency. Night or day, LPD is the first contact for any arrest or booking question tied to city limits.

The agency is small but full service. It has 16 State Certified sworn officers, 1 civilian Administrative Assistant, and 8 Parking Ambassadors. The staff is split into a Patrol Division, a Criminal Investigations unit, and a seasonal Bicycle and Beach Patrol. That last unit is a busy one in summer when the coastal population swells and the call volume climbs. Most bookings feed through patrol officers, then get filed up to the Delaware State Bureau of Identification for statewide tracking.

Here is the Lewes Police Department home page:

Lewes Police Department page lists staff, unit roles, and direct contact numbers for records. Lewes Recent Bookings Lewes Police Department page

The page is the fastest way to get a phone number or a mailing address for a specific request. It does not show a daily arrest log, and the department does not post mugshots or booking sheets online.

LPD offers in-person fingerprinting at the station for licensing, immigration, and firearm purchase purposes. You need to call first or stop by to set a time. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. The department rolls the prints on standard cards and ships them up to SBI for processing. Results are not same day. You get them back through the requesting agency, not through LPD.

For actual record requests, LPD points the public to a formal written channel. No drop-in lookup exists. The department does keep arrest records, but the files live on the agency side and must be pulled through FOIA. Original records have to be reviewed at City Hall during regular business hours.

Lewes Recent Bookings FOIA Process

The City of Lewes runs its own FOIA office. That is the main channel for any request that touches police reports, incident logs, or booking paperwork tied to Lewes Recent Bookings. The Freedom of Information Act page lays out the forms, the coordinator email, and the fee rules. Lewes Recent Bookings City of Lewes FOIA page

The FOIA Coordinator contact is FOIACoordinator@ci.lewes.de.us. Mail goes to FOIA Coordinator, City of Lewes, PO Box 227, Lewes, DE 19958. The fax number is (302) 645-6406. You can file the request through the online request form or send a written letter. The city FOIA policy PDF covers the full steps.

Response time is 15 business days max. The city may extend that for voluminous records, legal advice, or archived files. Your request must be in writing. You can use the Attorney General standard form or your own letter, as long as you describe the records with enough detail (types, dates, parties, subject matter). It helps to state the max cost you are willing to pay up front, so the city does not pause work over a fee question.

The fee schedule is set by statute:

  • First 20 pages free for black and white standard copies
  • $0.10 per sheet after that ($0.20 double sided)
  • Oversized copies at actual cost plus vendor charge
  • Admin fees when a request takes more than 1 hour, billed per quarter hour at the lowest-paid staff rate

Payment is due at the time of record release. The city may ask for prepayment on larger jobs.

Some files are off limits. Investigatory files compiled for law enforcement purposes may be exempt under 29 Del. C. § 10002(l). FOIA does not force the city to create records that do not exist. Original records must be examined at City Hall, and hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, holidays excluded. If a request is denied, you can petition the Attorney General through the Delaware AG Open Government page. Christine Purnell handles FOIA at AG, with email to opengovernment@delaware.gov.

Delaware State Police Troop 7

Not every arrest near Lewes is a city case. Delaware State Police Troop 7 sits at 18006 Coastal Highway, Lewes, DE 19958. The phone is (302) 644-5020. Troop 7 is the primary DSP unit for the unincorporated areas of Sussex County around Lewes. Any stop, crash, or arrest made on state roads or outside city limits usually runs through this troop.

Troop 7 arrest records show up in two places. Major arrests get posted as press releases through the DSP Newsroom. You can also pull them on the arrest archive. Expect a 24 to 48 hour lag. Minor cases often do not make the news feed.

For a specific police report or crash report from Troop 7, you need a FOIA request filed with the Delaware State Police. The agency routes it through the Department of Safety and Homeland Security. Criminal history checks go through the State Bureau of Identification, not the troop itself.

Current Custody for Lewes Arrests

Once a Lewes arrest leads to detention, the person gets moved into the state prison system. Delaware runs a unified jail model, so there is no Lewes city jail and no Sussex county jail. Adults booked on state charges go to one of the four Level 5 facilities run by the Delaware Department of Correction.

For folks arrested in or near Lewes, the main facility is Sussex Correctional Institution at 23203 DuPont Blvd, Georgetown. The phone is (302) 856-5280. A second nearby site, Sussex Community Corrections Center, is at 23207 DuPont Blvd, Georgetown, (302) 856-5790. Both sit in the county seat about 15 miles west of town.

The quickest way to check custody status is VINELink. It is free and runs 24/7. You search by name or offender ID, and the data refreshes every 15 minutes for jails and twice a day for prisons. VINELink also lets you register for email, phone, text, or TTY alerts when status changes. The service is anonymous. Inmate data drops off roughly two weeks after release, so act fast if you are tracking a recent booking.

Note: VINELink is the DOC's go-to for public inmate lookup. The DOC itself does not run a separate search portal.

Lewes Recent Bookings Court Data

Most Lewes cases get arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court first, then move up to the Court of Common Pleas or Superior Court depending on the charge. The Sussex County Courthouse is at 1 The Circle, Georgetown, DE 19947. The Court of Common Pleas clerk is (302) 856-5333. Superior Court is (302) 855-7055.

The state's free case search is CourtConnect. Once a booking becomes an open case, you can pull the docket online. Search by last name, first name, middle name, or business name. Filter by case type or date range. CourtConnect covers Superior Court, Court of Common Pleas, Justice of the Peace Court, and parts of Family Court. It is the best free tool for checking whether an arrest has moved into the formal case stage.

Records you can see include case number, filing date, parties, attorneys, docket entries, hearing dates, motions, and sentencing data when posted. Juvenile cases, sealed cases, and most Family Court files are not online. Expunged records disappear from the site by design.

For active warrants near Lewes, the DELJIS Wanted Persons portal is the public tool. Search by last name. Results show full name, DOB month and year, race, sex, pending charges, issuing court, warrant number, and case number. Only law enforcement can execute a warrant. Do not act on any hit yourself.

Lewes Archive Center Records

The city keeps its own public archive of reports and statements. The Lewes Archive Center hosts Audited Financial Statements, City Management Reports, and the 2024 Lewes Police Department Annual Report. It also posts Monthly MCC (Mayor & City Council) Reports that include rolling police stats. Lewes Recent Bookings Lewes Archive Center

The archive is searchable by keyword. You can filter by category, by last week, month, 6 months, or a custom date range. It is a useful stop for summary stats. But note: no daily booking logs or arrest rosters live here. The police data posted is summary or statistical, not individual booking records.

For a specific Lewes Recent Bookings file, the archive will not help. You still need to file a formal FOIA with the City FOIA Coordinator. The archive fills a different role: it gives the public a view into agency performance over time, not into any single case.

Criminal History Checks Near Lewes

Fingerprint-based criminal history record information (CHRI) is not public under Delaware FOIA. Only the subject, an employer with signed authorization, or an authorized criminal justice agency can pull it. Under 11 Del. C. § 8502, CHRI is held outside the public records system.

The closest SBI office for Lewes residents is in Georgetown. The Sussex site is at the Thurman Adams State Service Center, 546 S. Bedford St, Room 202, Georgetown, DE 19947.
